Six rom coms from the 2000s to watch this Valentine’s Day

The 2000s brought us a lot: iconic old school pop, the peak of Disney channel and of course many questionable fashion trends. However, the best thing that the noughties gifted us is indisputably the golden
age of rom coms. Sure, there are the ones that Netflix releases each year full of cheesiness, clichés and comedy (or attempts at it), but what about the originals that they pay homage to? Indulge yourself in childhood nostalgia by watching these gems you may have forgotten about this Valentine’s Day.

1. Serendipity (2001)
Based around the concept of ‘if it’s meant to be, it will be’, Kate Beckinsale stars in this film as a firm believer in fate. When she and a stranger have an encounter that seems star-crossed, the pair follow clues to find their way back to one another.

2. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
Before starting Fabletics, Kate Hudson was a trouper of the rom com genre. In this film, that will actually make you laugh out loud, she stars as a budding  journalist whose boss finally allows her to write a story of her choice. The catch? She first must win a bet to repel Mathew McConaughey’s character in just over a week.

3. 50 First Dates (2004)
A woman (Drew Barrymore) who suffers from short term memory loss is pursued by king-of-rom-com Adam Sandler’s character. Everyday he makes her fall in love with him, only for her to forget who he is the next morning. Despite a clichéd storyline, Barrymore and Sandler’s performances and chemistry will be tugging at your heartstrings.

4. 13 Going on 30 (2004)
After an embarrassing incident at her birthday party, Jenna Rink’s (Jennifer Gardiner) wish to be thirty becomes true. Though the film is light-hearted and paired with a great soundtrack, it is an emotional reminder for us to appreciate what we have in the present.

5. 500 Days of Summer (2009)
With an unconventional rom-com trope and inspiration from retro films, this movie is for
those who may have bittersweet feelings about Valentine’s Day. As the narrator says at the beginning “this is not a love story” but one that reminds us of the realities of what love can feel and be like.

6. He’s Just Not That Into You (2009)
Based on the best-selling book, this rom com explores the complexities of four relationships and lives intertangled with one another. With just enough drama to keep you entertained and a classic happy ending, this movie will be sure to leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling.
